Release Areas W13-19 and W13-20 are located in the offshore North Perth Basin, covering large areas of the Houtman and Abrolhos sub-basins, and parts of the Gascoyne and Zeewyck sub-basins. A number of wells within the Release Areas have hydrocarbon shows, including Houtman 1, Livet 1, Morangie 1 and Wittecarra 1. Release Areas W13-19 and W13-20 are located partly within a marine reserve Multiple Use Zone (IUCN VI) and Special Purpose Zone (IUCN VI); for further information refer to Special Notices.
The northern Perth Basin formed through continental extension between the southwestern margin of Australia and Greater India during the Paleozoic to Mesozoic. The Abrolhos Sub-basin contains a Permian–Cretaceous sedimentary section up to 6,000 m thick; the Houtman Sub-basin, located farther basinward, is a predominantly Jurassic–Cretaceous depocentre.
The Early Triassic Hovea Member of the Kockatea Shale provides the best potential source rock in the Release Areas, with a range of other potential source rocks present within the Triassic–Jurassic succession. Permo-Triassic tilted fault blocks provide structural traps in the Abrolhos Sub-basin, with tilted fault blocks or horsts and faulted anticlines within the Jurassic section providing potential exploration targets in the Houtman Sub-basin.
